The most beloved city
The “nymph of the North” also known as Thessaloniki or even co-capital is perhaps the most beloved city in Greece. It is famous for many things: its history, its forms of entertainment.
The White Tower, symbol of Thessaloniki, “carries” a history of years, while Eptapyrgio with its castles “crown” the city.
With a history that is lost in the depths of the centuries, the White Tower, the emblem of Thessaloniki is more than just a simple attraction. It dates back around the 15th century after the conquest of Thessaloniki by the Turkish. At first it was called “The Tower of the Lion”, later it is referred to as “The Fortress of Kalamaria”, while in the 19th century as “The Tower of the Janissaries” and “The Tower of Blood”. It got its modern name when a Jewish convict, Nathan Guidili, whitewashed it in exchange for his freedom in 1891. A story worth listening to when in Thessaloniki.
Regarding Eptapyrgio, it is the fortified Acropolis of Thessaloniki, the
so-called Eptapyrgio, which overlooks the entire city as well as Thermaikos.
